SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – For the first time since 2005, California Baptist University has started a season with consecutive wins. The Lancers earned both victories at the UC Santa Barbara Asics Invitational against the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Quincy on Friday.
CBU overcame hiccups in both outings to clinch the matches, defeating NJIT in four sets and Quincy in five. The Lancers overcame a third-set loss to the Highlanders for a 25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15 victory, and needed to do the same in their nightcap with the Hawks. CBU split the first two sets with Quincy and had to rally from a fourth-set loss to claim a thrilling 25-21, 25-27, 25-22, 11-25, 15-10 win.
It gives Coach Derek Schmitt wins in his first two matches as CBU's head coach. Statistics for the matches were not readily available, but this story will be updated once they are.
NJIT starts 0-1 and Quincy slips to 0-2 this year. The Hawks lost both their matches in five sets, taking ninth-ranked host UC Santa Barbara to five sets before falling 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 15-10.
