RIVERSIDE, Calif. — When it comes to Van Dyne Gym, No. 5-ranked California Baptist University knows how to take care of business. The Lancers grabbed a 95-60 win over Simon Fraser Friday night, improving their home record to an impressive 50-2 since Rick Croy took over the helm in 2013.
The Lancers remain undefeated this year, sitting 5-0 overall, while the Clan drop to 2-3 on the year.
Fresh off a 42-point performance on Tuesday, Michael Smith continued on a scoring rampage and finished with 27 points (9-for-13). Jordan Heading (4-for-7) and Kalidou Diouf (5-for-7) also scored in double figures, each adding 13 points. Diouf also dished out a career-high five assists.
Mason Stuteville led the Lancers off the glass, finishing with seven rebounds. Bul Kuol, Diouf and Colin DeLaere each followed with six boards to help CBU out-rebound SFU 46-to-23.
SFU came out strong and took a 13-6 lead five minutes into the game.
CBU cleaned up its defense and went on a 22-2 run to turn things around quickly. Kuol knocked down a three-pointer to even the score at 15-15, before Heading stole the ball away and scored on the fast break. De'jon Davis banked in a shot off the glass to add some cushion and Smith scored back-to-back layups to fuel the run.
With just under seven minutes before halftime, the Clan broke the scoring drought, 28-17, but Smith drove to the basket after a Diouf steal to put CBU in front by 20 points, 41-21.
The Clan managed to cut the margin to 45-30 at halftime, but it was only a matter of time before the Lancers broke the game wide open.
It happened with 12 minutes remaining on the clock as the Lancers went on an 8-0 run to take a 30-point lead. Jason Todd sparked the spurt with a layup off a Marquise Mosley assist, before stealing the ball away in the next play to score on the fast break. Diouf capped the run with a dunk and a layup to put CBU up 73-43.
In the last 10 minutes, four different Lancers contributed to seal the 95-60 victory. Stuteville, DeLaere, George Petersen, Jr. and Ben Wood all chipped in.
CBU returns to Van Dyne tomorrow night, hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith at 7:00 p.m. in its final non-conference game before PacWest action starts next week on Thursday at Point Loma.
