RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 5-ranked California Baptist University dominated a 91-60 victory over rival Azusa Pacific Saturday night to remain undefeated on the year.
CBU improves to 8-0 on the year, 2-0 in the PacWest. The Cougars drop to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Five Lancers finished the night in double figures, led by Michael Smith with 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Jordan Heading followed with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Kalidou Diouf posted 13 points (4-for-5). Casey Norris and Marquise Mosley rounded out the quintet with 11 points apiece.
As a team, CBU shot 58.6-percent from the field, including an impressive 58.3-percent from three-point range. The Lancers also out-rebounded APU 36-to-25.
Diouf got the ball rolling with the first seven points of the night, before the Cougars even knew what hit them. APU managed to cut the margin down to two points, 16-14, but it was the closest the visitors would ever get.
CBU responded with a 12-2 run to put itself up by double-digits. Heading sparked the run with a fast break layup after Mosley stole the ball away and found Heading on the counterattack, 28-16.
The Cougars managed to pull within single digits, 30-21, with just over five minutes left in the first, but the Lancers closed out the half on a 20-5 spurt to boast a 50-26 cushion at the break. Smith, Norris and Heading all got in on the action to give CBU the heavy upper hand.
It seemed the Lancers were unstoppable as they quickly built up a 40-point lead over their rivals, 75-35, halfway through the second. Smith and Mosley rattled in back-to-back threes to all but seal the victory for CBU.
In the final 10 minutes, the Lancers just coasted to walk away with the 91-60 win.
CBU continues PacWest action as it hosts Dixie State next Thursday at 7 p.m.
