RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- California Baptist University nearly took the top-ranked team in the nation, Long Beach State, to five sets but the 49ers block came alive late for a four-set win (25-20, 17-25, 25-16, 25-21) in the Van Dyne Gym Wednesday.
Roy Powell recorded his second double-double in as many weeks, with 10 kills and 10 digs. Rocky DeLyon finished with a team-high 14 kills and five blocks. Rohit Paul finished with 11 kills and two blocks for the Lancers.
CBU dropped to 7-7, 2-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. LBSU improved to 10-2, 7-2. The Lancers hosts 11th-ranked Cal State Northridge on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym.
After dropping a close first set, CBU's offense came alive in the second. The Lancers won the set comfortably, 25-17, by hitting an overwhelming .560 (16 kills, two errors on 25 attempts) in the game.
Powell and Paul each had five kills without an error in the second set, while DeLyon tallied four with one error. A 13-6 run on four Paul kills and two others from DeLyon and Jackson Burge pushed the Lancers out to a 15-8 lead in the second.
A 3-1 charge increased the advantage to eight, 23-15, after a kill and ace from Powell. A spike from Paul gave CBU set point and a service error secured the win to tie the match at a set apiece.
The match appeared to be heading to a fifth and deciding set when CBU went on a 4-0 run, on a Powell kill and block from Paul and Burge, for a 19-15 lead in the fourth set.
That's when the 49ers blockers locked in on the action. Long Beach closed out the match on a 10-2 run, thanks to its block logging five of its 14 blocks down the stretch.
