Miller Notches First-Career Shutout

CARSON, Calif. – It's no secret the buzz about Tyson Miller had been spreading this offseason, and it was easy to see why in California Baptist University's series opener at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.
Miller, a right-handed pitcher, spun a gem on the mound for the Lancers. He recorded his third complete game and first shutout of his career in a 3-0 win on the Toros home field. The junior allowed just five base runners (four hits, one walk) and struck out a career-high 12. CBU improves to 3-1 this season and CSUDH falls to 3-2.
The three-game, non-conference series heads to Totman Stadium Friday for a 6 p.m. first pitch. It concludes back in Carson on Saturday at noon.
While Miller cruised for most of the game, retiring the side in order in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, he got a huge lift from his offense late.
CBU was in search of some insurance going into the top of the ninth with a 1-0 lead it earned in the fourth inning which made things too close for comfort. Alec Morabito started the final inning with a bunt single, and a sacrifice bunt from Zack Norris moved him into scoring position.
The small-ball start to the inning was flipped on its head when Andrew Montoya came up to bat. The senior shortstop worked his way into a hitter-friendly 2-1 count and sent the next pitch over the right-field fence to give the Lancers a big 3-0 lead.
It came in handy when Cal State Dominguez Hills put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Miller regrouped and struck out the next two batters on six pitches to end the game.
Bryce Macy got his second-straight start behind the plate for the Lancers and continued to impress. He went 2-for-4 in the game and helped get his team on the board in the fourth.
Stephen Lohr singled up the middle on a full count to put a runner on with one out in the inning. Macy then turned on the first pitch he saw and sent it down the right-field line for a single, while moving Lohr up to third. A.J. David, who also singled in the game, then skied a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Lohr home.
Brian Ruhm continued to lead the Lancers' offense, going 2-for-5 and stealing a base in the game. He is hitting .412 on the year now (7-for-17), which second on the team only to Macy's .429 (3-for-7), though Ruhm has started and played in every game.
