LOS ANGELES – A six-match homestand came to an abrupt end with a trip to fourth-ranked UCLA on Wednesday for No. 15 California Baptist University. The Bruins pulled out a straight-set victory, 25-18, 25-19, 25-13, with a big advantage at the service line.
CBU received eight kills and an ace from Rocky DeLyon and an impressive eight digs from freshman libero Emmett Enriques in the match. Three Lancers – Jackson Burge (five kills), Enrique de Diego Garcia (four kills) and Kevin Vaz (three kills) – each logged three blocks.
UCLA improves to 14-3, 10-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with the win. CBU is now 8-10, 3-10 in conference.
Things opened up with a 5-0 run from the Bruins, but CBU battled back with three-straight points to keep things at a five-point deficit, 15-10, in the first set. A block and kill from Garcia spearheaded the run.
A 4-1 run sparked by a Burge kill and DeLyon ace was CBU's finest spurt of the set, but it still led to UCLA taking set point, 24-18. The Bruins ended the set with a kill for the early match lead.
In set two, UCLA started on a 6-2 run. A kill, followed by two-straight blocks from Vaz — with Burge assisting on each block — kept the Lancers within a point, 8-7. However, the Bruins would score seven of the next nine points to take a 15-9 advantage.
With its back against the wall, CBU would claw all the way back within two points, 19-17, with an 8-4 run. Burge provided a block and a kill in the run, while Vaz and Garcia finished the charge with a kill and a block, respectively. UCLA would rattle off the next four points that put it well on the way to another win.
Next up for CBU is a trip to eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 7 p.m. The Lancers will look to build on their previous meeting when they forced the Gauchos to five tense sets.
