Digging the Cardinal
3/25/2016 11:27:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. – Despite an impressive performance from libero Emmett Enriques, California Baptist University could not overcome fifth-ranked Stanford in a three-set, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19 loss Friday night.
Enriques, a true freshman, came through with a match-high 15 digs in the loss to help hold the Cardinal to a .179 hitting percentage (28-13-84). It was a career best for Enriques in three-set matches this season and not far off the 18 digs that currently serve as the program high from an individual in a three-set match put up by Tyler Hagstrom against Missouri Baptist in 2005.
CBU will look to rebound against Holy Names in non-conference play Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lancers are now 11-14, 4-14 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Cardinal is 17-3, 15-3.
Rocky DeLyon put up a team-high 10 kills, four digs and a block for CBU. Zachary Melcher finished with 26 assists, four digs, two blocks and a kill. Luis Palos logged six kills, four digs and a block. Enrique de Diego Garcia had six kills, three blocks, an ace and dig.
In set one, Stanford raced out to an 8-4 lead before the Lancers responded to force a tie at 11-11 with a 7-3 run. DeLyon had two kills in the span, while Palos and Roy Powell each added one and Garcia chipped in an ace.
The Cardinal scored four of the next five points to take a lead it would not let go of in a 25-16 win.
A 5-2 run was CBU's finest in set two, with two Jackson Burge kills starting it and one each from Powell and Palos ending it. It gave the Lancers a 15-13 lead, but Stanford rebounded and pulled out the win on momentum from a 6-0 run that put it up 22-18 late.
Cody Jackson sparked a 4-0 run for CBU in the third and final set, as he smashed two aces to end the run that was started on a Garcia kill. It brought the Lancers within four points of Stanford, 18-14, but that was as close as they would get.
