RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Facing its second-straight ranked opponent in three days, California Baptist University took it to extra sets once again, but dropped a 3-1 loss to No. 3-ranked Long Beach State.
The Lancers drop to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with the four-set loss (25-18, 25-14, 19-25, 25-18). The Beach improves to 3-1 on the year and an even 1-1 in conference.
Four Lancers each posted seven kills in Rohit Paul, Luis Palos, Logan Czyzewski and Kevin Vaz. Cody Jackson helped move the ball for CBU, finishing with 25 assists on the night. Emmett Enriques kept the ball in play for the Lancers, grabbing a team-high nine digs in the result.
After LBSU threatened a three-set sweep by winning the first two sets, CBU buckled down and found its response.
The 49ers opened with three-straight points, before the Lancers evened the score at 5-5. LBSU jumped back in front 15-13, but CBU came firing back.
Czyzewski laid down a kill to spark a 5-0 run, putting the Lancers in the driving seat as he kept it going from the service line. Jackson and Paul each found holes in the 49er defense for kills, while Vaz went up for two blocks, including one with Jackson, to help fuel the run.
LBSU blew both its timeouts trying to stop the bleeding, but CBU had taken control of the set. Another 5-0 run gave the Lancers set point off a Paul ace and a solo stuff from Vaz sealed the deal at 25-19.
The Lancers looked to carry momentum over into the fourth and jumped out in front 5-3. Jackson and Enrique de Diego Garcia teamed up for a combo block to give CBU the two-point cushion.
Both teams battled to get some separation, battling through ties at 13, 14, 15 and 16.
The Beach broke through and took a 20-17 lead. Paul ended the spurt, but the Lancers couldn't use the momentum as Long Beach State took the set 25-18 to grab the match.
CBU heads to No. 2-ranked UCLA on Wednesday with first serve scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
