Battling the Bruins

LOS ANGELES — Facing its third-straight ranked opponent in as many matches, California Baptist University showed its resilience in a three-set lost at No. 2-ranked UCLA Wednesday night (25-21, 25-17, 25-22).
The Lancers – who are receiving votes in the latest NCAA coaches' poll – drop to 2-4 overall, 1-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Bruins improve to 5-1 on the year and remain undefeated in conference at 3-0.
UCLA jumped out 4-1 early in the first set, but the Lancers came battling back. Kevin Vaz (four kills, five blocks) grabbed an ace before Logan Czyzewski (seven kills) smacked down a kill to even things up at 7-7.
CBU would force ties at 9-9 and 10-10 before the Bruins started to get some separation.
Down 18-14, Coach Derek Schmitt called a timeout and Czyzewski kept the Bruins from getting too much momentum with a spike from the left side. Vaz stuffed two UCLA attempts – with an assist from Cody Jackson on one – to force a Bruin timeout.
The Lancers kept coming and pulled within two, 21-19, but UCLA took the set 25-21.
CBU looked to come out strong in the second and opened with the first three points of the set. Two UCLA errors combined with a solo block from Vaz to fuel the run and give the Lancers the upper hand early on.
On its heels, UCLA climbed back to force ties at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7, but seemed to find its footing and opened up an eight-point lead, 23-15. It proved too much for CBU to come back from, despite Enrique de Diego Garcia (five kills, two aces) putting a stop in the run with a kill straight down the middle.
Down two sets, the Lancers dug deep and forced ties at 1-1, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5, but couldn't quite seem to pull ahead.
Still, CBU kept fighting.
Luis Palos (nine kills) hit a cross-court shot and Garcia found a hole of the left side of the court to keep the Lancers in the game, 17-13. Palos kept momentum in CBU's favor, slipping a kill past the Bruins at the net trying for a block, forcing a UCLA timeout, 17-14.
The Bruins fell a part in the next play, but wouldn't let the Lancers pull closer than two points, despite a late rally from the visitors. Down 24-20, a Garcia kill and an attack error from UCLA kept the Lancers alive, 24-22.
UCLA called a timeout and secured the three-set victory in the next play.
CBU takes on yet another ranked foe on Friday, heading to No. 12-ranked UC Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. first serve.
