RIVERSIDE, Calif. — For the first time this season, No. 6-ranked California Baptist University found itself trailing.
It only lasted four minutes and three seconds, however, as the Lancers grabbed a 3-1 victory over Chaminade Thursday afternoon.
"At the end of the day, you want to get the result, I think we made harder work at it than we needed to," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "Fortunately, the guys responded really well [to going down] and we were able to get the win."
CBU improves to 9-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the PacWest, while extending its program-best unbeaten streak to 11 games. The Silverswords drop to 2-6-1 on the year, 1-5-1 in conference.
The Lancers had multiple chances early, but the Chaminade goalkeeper came up big each time.
"We came out really well," said Michaelson. "We should've had numerous early goals and were unlucky not to. Their goalkeeper made a few big saves, too."
It allowed the visitors to take advantage of a set piece in the 20th minute to put CBU behind for the first time all year.
"It's good to see how your team reacts to going down a goal – it's going to happen," said Michaelson. "To come back and score two goals that quickly was a great reaction."
However, it didn't really faze the Lancers as almost exactly four minutes later, Junior Guerra equalized off a one-touch volley from a Joey Chica assist.
"It feels good knowing I helped contribute to the win," said Chica, who had a goal and two assists on the day. "This win just puts us in a better spot in the PacWest and helps us continue to separate from the other teams."
Almost a minute later, Chica got on the other end of a scoring play to put his team in front 2-1. Hugo Gutierrez crossed in the ball, allowing Aidan Apodaca to flick it on, where Chica volleyed it in.
The Lancers held on to their 2-1 lead heading into halftime, but were looking for more.
They found it in the 77th minute as Abe Placito crossed a ball into the 18-yard box, where Chica one-touched it over to a wide-open Preston Judd at the far post, who tapped it in, 3-1.
Chaminade put on the pressure late, but couldn't find the back of the net again to settle for the 3-1 result.
CBU turns right around to take on Fresno Pacific on the road for a 7:30 p.m. kick off on Saturday.
