RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It was a split Saturday for California Baptist University's swim and dive teams, as the divers opened at home at the Lancer Dive Invite and the swimmers wrapped up at the Malibu Invite.
Jerome Heidrich logged three times less than a second off NCAA Division II consideration times in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyles at Pepperdine. Meanwhile, Zach Parry and Garret Chew battled it out for supremacy on the boards back in Riverside, with Parry just edging out Chew on both boards. The Lancers' dynamic diving duo showed they're closing in on the respective NCAA Division II consideration standards of 285 and 295 on the 1 and 3-meter boards, as well.
Parry totaled 282.15 points on the 3-meter and 272.15 points for first place in both events, while Chew's 247.55 on the 3-meter and 265.10 at the 1-meter dive secured him a runner-up finish out of 11 divers, with Divison I Cal Poly also in attendance.
Heidrich just missed a B cut in the 200 free (1:40.31) by .06 of a second, posting the fastest time in the event with a time of one minute, 40.37 seconds. Brandon Schuster was less than half second off the D-II cut, as well, with a 1:40.66 giving him second place behind Heidrich. Colton Babcock (1:42.24) and Alexis Ohmar (1:42.67) posted the third and fourth fastest times in the event on Saturday.
In the 50 free, it came down a touch again with Heidrich's 20.99 missing the consideration time (20.81) by .18 of a second. It was less than half a second separating Heidrich from the B cut again in the 100 free, with his first-place time of 46.02 just off the 45.59 consideration time.
Even with the 200 free, the Lancers' greatest show of depth came in the 200 butterfly. They logged the top-five times in the event on the day, with Robert Griffith (1:54.49), Quinn Birtles (1:55.55), Josh Fluetsch (1:55.81), Justin Quiroga (1:56.14) and Riley Forristel (1:57.01) rounding out the top five.
Sean Foster (2:07.60), Adrien Deloffre (2:08.59) and Ryan Schade (2:10.87) posted the top-three times in the 200 breaststroke. Jacob Leahy (1:54.80) and Matt Amano (1:55.80) went one-two in the 200 back, while Foster (59.28) and Schade (1:00.08) did so in the 100 breast.
The Lancers won several sprints, as well, with Quiroga winning the 50 fly (23.41), Leahy the 50 (23.65) and 100 (52.54) backs, Heidrich the 100 fly (51.99) and Schuster the 100 individual medley (53.15). Babcock, Deloffre, Quiroga and Kyle White won the 300-free relay in 2:08.09, as well.
It was also a big day for CBU's newcomers. True freshmen divers Zane Freeman and Keifer Rex made their home debuts to make success, with Freeman taking fifth on the 1-meter with 227.10 points and seventh at 3-meter (204.8). Rex took eighth on 1-meter (171.95) and ninth on the 3-meter board (165.4).
