IRVINE, Calif. — Taking a break from conference action, California Baptist University headed to Concordia University of Irvine, but just dropped a five-set loss Saturday night.
The Lancers came-from-behind to force a deciding set, but couldn't complete the comeback (25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-8) to drop to 3-15 on the year. The Eagles improve to 14-7 with the win.
After dropping the first set 25-20, CBU got better and better in each set, posting its best performance in the fourth. The Lancers hit at a 43.3-percent to take the game 25-22 and force a fifth set.
Tied at 4-4 in the fourth, CBU scored three-straight points to put some distance between itself and the Eagles. An attack error gave the Lancers the sideout point to start the spurt, before Rohit Paul smacked down a kill and another CUI error put CBU in front 7-4.
Despite the Lancers taking as high as a four-point lead in the set, the Eagles came clawing their way back in it and tied the set up at 19-19. Back-to-back kills from Paul and Luis Palos gave CBU some breathing room and forced a Concordia timeout.
The Eagles tried to come back again, pulling within one at 23-22, but Kevin Vaz sealed the set victory for the Lancers with consecutive kills.
Vaz and Paul led CBU with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, while Caleb Miller finished with six kills without committing a single error. The senior also posted six blocks on the night, including a solo stuff. Defensively, Emmett Enriques finished with 13 digs, followed by Paul with nine.
The Lancers return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Tuesday, heading to UC San Diego for a 6:00 p.m. match.
