RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 25-ranked California Baptist University extended its winning streak to six consecutive games Saturday after an 11-4 victory over Claremont Mudd-Scripps in the second day of play at the Lancer Invite.
The tournament host improve to 13-8 overall, while CMS drops to 6-9 on the season.
Paizlee Dreyer finished with a hat trick, while Lizette Perez, Annie Eubanks and Abi Auer contributed with two goals apiece. Allie Coleman and Valerie Spezzaferri also added one goal each. Defensively, Lina Medeiros posted four saves and had four steals.
Spezzaferri got the first quarter going after a quick sprint gave CBU possession and the momentum needed to chase down the win. Neither team could find the back of the cage right away, however.
Eubanks found the hole on a 6-on-5 with just under a minute left in the first quarter to put CBU on the board and end the quarter.
Another win off the sprint in CBU's favor kept the momentum going, allowing a quick funnel into the two-meter hand of Dreyer. She scored easily off the catch and shoot to put the Lancers up 2-0.
After CMS drew an exclusion on Medeiros, allowing the Athenas to get on the board, but CBU quickly responded with a goal by Perez. Another CMS exclusion gave the Lancers the opportunity to capitalize on the man-up advantage and tack on another goal.
Before the end of the second, however, a turnover led to a CMS goal making the score 4-2 at the end of the half.
Confusion in the start of the third led to a jump ball in CMS's favor, resulting a goal in the first 30 seconds of the second half.
It started a back-and-forth, minute-long battle with goals from Auer, CMS and Auer once more, leading to a CBU timeout to regain composure as it held onto the 7-4 lead.
Perez scored with just over three minutes left in the third quarter to give CBU a stronger offensive hand in the pool. An offensive foul led to an intense minute of play to close out the third quarter as Spezzaferri found the ball and fired it in the top shelf to close out the quarter 8-4.
The Lancers ran away with the lead in the fourth as Eubanks skimmed the ball under the arm of the CMS goalie to ramp up the intensity and the lead with over six minutes left in the game. Eubanks then captured the ball off the rebound of a failed CMS goal to find a wide open Coleman to bring the score up to 10-4.
CMS drew a power play, but the Lancer defense denied CMS the man-advantage goal, making way to Dreyer, who put the game away with another goal to seal the 11-4 victory over the Athenas.
The Lancers remain at home, hosting Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
