RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University kept momentum rolling Tuesday night with another doubleheader sweep, beating Academy of Art 2-0 and 8-0 (five innings).
The Lancers improve to 14-7 on the year and 8-2 in the PacWest to move into second place in the conference standings. The Urban Knights drop to 11-9 overall, 5-3 in conference after their five-game winning streak comes to an end.
Kellye Springstead and Ciara Stapp each posted shutouts on the night, with each pitcher throwing two strikeouts in their respective games.
Defense carried over into offense as the Lancers out-hit the Knights 9-to-4. London Miller and Soraya Shahbazian led CBU with two hits on the day, including home runs for each Lancer.
It was a pitchers' duel in the opener, with Springstead coming out on top. She only allowed one hit, while CBU took advantage of four hits.
Despite getting a hit in the bottom of the second, it wasn't until the third where CBU would score. Alley Johnson led the inning off with a single to left, but Art U threatened to end the frame by grabbing the next two outs. Shahbazian kept the inning alive with an RBI base hit, putting the Lancers up 1-0.
CBU's defense backed Springstead up, not allowing a base runner until the top of the sixth. The Lancers squashed any hopes of the Knights tying up the game, however, as Krista Mann, Erin Burkhart and Brittany Galvez teamed up for a double play to end the inning.
The Lancers added some insurance in the bottom half of the frame, as Galvez drove in Diana Gomez from second with a base hit up the middle.
Neither team would plate any more runs, giving CBU the 2-0 victory.
The Lancers didn't waste time in the nightcap, scoring two runs in their first chance at the plate. Caitlyn Lloyd drew a rogue pitch to the body before Miller stepped up to the plate to drill her seventh homer of the season to put CBU up 2-0 early.
Art U grabbed two outs early in the second, but the Lancers weren't fazed. Mann started a rally with a single up the middle and proceeded to steal second. She was joined on base by Lloyd, who drew ball four in her at-bat. Shahbazian then turned on a pitch and sent it sailing over the fence at center to give the Lancers a 5-0 cushion.
The Knights managed to maintain the Lancers in the third, but an RBI triple from Lloyd in the fourth put pressure on the visitors to score before CBU could end the game early.
In the top of the fifth, Art U got some hope as it put a runner in scoring position at second with one out. Stapp struck out the next batter and drew a lineout to Mann to keep her shutout intact.
Once again, the Knights grabbed two quick outs in the bottom of the frame, but the Lancers put together another two-out rally.
Ali Subia drew a hit by pitch and Hannah Thieroff joined her on base with ball four. Gomez took over the running for Thieroff, with both runners advancing a base on a wild pitch. Halle Rosario sealed the run-rule victory with a double to left center, sending Subia and Gomez home to end the game early.
The Lancers hit the road for almost a month, heading to Hawaii for 10 games, starting at Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday. CBU returns home to John C. Funk Stadium on April 8th when it hosts Concordia University of Irvine for a doubleheader at noon.
