Late Heartbreak Again in Stephenville

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS - The final day of the regular season looked promising early on for California Baptist softball, but just like in game one on Friday, the Texans rallied late to overcome a two-run deficit and claim the victory with a 3-2 scoreline. The Lancers finish out the regular season with an overall record of 24-30 while going 11-13 in conference play.

The Lancers did well to shake off a tough Friday and start Saturday morning on a fast, positive note. Matti Severns and Priscilla Estrada led off the game with back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners for the Lancers. A sacrifice fly from Kate Penberthy would get the Lancers on the board first, bringing in Severns for the 1-0 lead.

Things would quiet down for a few innings after that until TSU broke onto the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a two-run bomb and an RBI single, both with two outs, to take a 3-1 lead. Penberthy would have another opportunity with runners at first and second in the seventh inning and would come through for her team again, singling to center field and again scoring Severns to make it a one-run difference. Estrada would make it to third on a fielder's choice, but a first-pitch groundout would end the rally and the game in favor of the Texans.

The loss leaves CBU as the 5-seed heading into next week's Western Athletic Conference tournament, meaning they will face the 8-seeded Utah Valley Wolverines in the second of two single-elimination games on Wednesday afternoon. The 1:00 p.m. game will be for the opportunity to move into the double-elimination bracket and face the 4th-seeded team in the nightcap on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
