GAFFNEY, S.C. — With the way California Baptist University has been playing, it was only a matter of time before the Lancers picked up a win. It came Tuesday night at Limestone when the Lancers swept the Saints 3-0 (25-17, 32-30, 25-18).
The Lancers improve to 4-18 overall, while Limestone drops to 8-8 on the year.
"Good to get a W after dropping a couple of tough matches last weekend where we played pretty well and were very competitive," said Coach Derek Schmitt. "We have to use our next two matches to keep improving before we head home for our final five matches."
Rohit Paul led the Lancers with 11 kills and eight digs, along with three aces and two blocks. Philip Schick and Kevin Vaz each chipped in nine kills, with Schick posting an impressive .692 hitting clip without a single error on the night. Schick added four blocks and seven digs defensively, while Vaz added a block and six digs.
Things were pretty back-and-forth early on in the first until CBU took an 8-4 lead off a 4-0 spurt. Limestone committed a service error to turn the ball over, before another Saint error kept it in the Lancers' hands. Enrique de Diego Garcia followed with an ace and Paul smacked down a kill to cap the run.
The Lancers kept rolling and soon turned their lead into a six-point cushion off back-to-back kills from Schick and Caleb Miller, before an attack error from Limestone put CBU in front 15-9. The visitors coasted that to a 25-17 victory as Vaz grabbed a kill to seal the win.
CBU had to go to work in the second. The Lancers jumped out to a 7-2 lead, with Miller and Garcia capping the spurt with a combo stuff.
Despite a five-point deficit, Limestone battled back to tie the set at 24-24 and 25-25, before briefly taking the lead 26-25, threatening to take the set.
Schmitt called a timeout and his team fought back to eventually take the extra-point set 32-30 off a kill from Schick.
CBU all but sealed the match win in the early goings of the third set, exploding out to a 6-0 lead. Paul opened the set up with back-to-back aces, before Garcia and Schick teamed up for a block at the net. Two attack errors from Limestone and another block from Cody Jackson and Schick gave the Lancers their six-point cushion.
The Saints pulled within three, 9-6, but CBU went off on another roll. Paul contributed four-straight points – three consecutive kills and a combination block with Schick – before Vaz smacked down a kill to put the Lancers in front 14-6.
Despite Limestone's late efforts, CBU sealed the sweep with a kill from Paul and a Saint error to take the set 25-18.
The Lancers remain in Gaffney, S.C., for a match Wednesday night against Schmitt's old team, Erskine, at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time.
