GAFFNEY, S.C. — Things are starting to click for California Baptist University as it dominated Erskine in its second consecutive three-set sweep Wednesday night.
The Lancers improve to 5-18 on the year with the 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 match victory, Erskine drops to 3-15 overall.
CBU hit at an impressive 47.6-percent throughout the match, committing just four errors in the three sets.
Enrique de Diego Garcia (.500) and Kevin Vaz (.368) led the Lancers with nine kills each, while Philip Schick and Caleb Miller each chipped in six kills on .600 and .545 respective hitting clips. Defensively, Cody Jackson and Schick led with five blocks each, while Garcia had a team-high eight digs.
Erskine may have opened the match on a three-point run, but it wasn't long before the Lancers found their rhythm. Tied at 9-9, back-to-back errors from the Flying Fleet sparked a 3-0 spurt for CBU as Jackson dumped the ball down for a kill, 12-9, to cap the run.
The Flying Fleet tried to keep the game close, but the Lancers started to pull away late, taking a 21-15 cushion off a 5-0 run. Rohit Paul smacked down a kill to start the scoring spree, with Schick (kill), Vaz (ace) and Jackson (kill) all getting in on the action, along with an Erskine error.
Miller then sealed the deal with a powerful kill down the middle to give CBU, which boasted a .556 hitting percentage in the first set, the 25-18 set victory.
CBU carried that momentum over into the second, jumping out to a quick 6-3 lead. The Flying Fleet managed to tie the frame at 11-11, but the Lancers responded with another three-point run to put some distance between the two teams. Miller started the run with a kill, before Garcia finished an attempt and Erskine sent one a little too long, 14-11.
Things got interesting when Erskine evened the set up once more, 17-17, but combo blocks from Schick and Jackson bookended four-consecutive points for the Lancers, 21-17. Garcia then sealed the 25-20 win with a kill off a Jackson assist.
With the two set cushion, CBU was in control and feeling it. After the Flying Fleet put up the first two points of the third, the Lancers responded with seven-straight points. Kills from Vaz, Jackson Burge and Luis Palos, along with blocks from Jackson, Burge and Garcia, gave CBU the five-point cushion, 7-2.
Erskine pulled within three, 10-7, but the Lancers took off on a 4-0 spurt to all but seal the match. The seven-point deficit was too much for the Flying Fleet to handle as Logan Allen finished things off with his first career kill off a Robert Hadobas set to give CBU the 25-20 win to take the match in three.
CBU has one last match on its East Coast swing, taking on Belmont Abbey on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Pacific. The Lancers will look to carry their two-match winning streak into the matchup and come home with some good momentum in tow.
