CBU Duo Goes Great Eight

SAN FRANCISCO – Just like in the opener, dominant starting pitching led California Baptist University to two victories and a series win over Academy of Art on Saturday. Andrew Bash and Logan Rinehart each threw eight innings in their starts to lead the Lancers to 6-3 and 6-2 wins over the Urban Knights.
CBU moves to 20-10, 11-5 in the PacWest and Art U is now 11-17, 7-8. The Lancers will head to Point Loma to take on the Sea Lions next week starting next Thursday at 3 p.m.
CBU's bullpen just about had the day off Saturday, with Bash and Rinehart starting on the mound. Bash gave up just five hits, two hits, one walk and struck out six on 116 pitches in the first game. Shortly thereafter, Rinehart allowed just six base runners (four hits, two walks), one run and struck out a career-high 10 on 110 pitches in the series finale.
Bash and the Lancers overcame a 2-0 first-inning deficit in game one. CBU scored five runs over the next two innings to jump in front 5-2. Meanwhile, Bash allowed just two hits, a walk and struck out six over the next seven innings.
Offensively, Zack Norris went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the game, while true freshman Nick Plaia was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Down 2-0, CBU loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning on a Bryce Macy double, DJ Porter single and walk to John Glenn. Academy of Art recorded its first out of the frame at home on a fielder's choice, but a wild pitch pushed the Lancers' first run across and Michael Mora plated two more with a double down the left-field line.
CBU's offense kept coming and put two more in in the third inning. Ryan Williams and Norris started the inning with singles, with an error bringing Williams home and Norris coming around on a sacrifice fly from Porter.
Norris and Luke Navigato padded the Lancers' lead in the seventh, with Norris doubling his way on base and Navigato driving him home with a single through the left side to make it a 6-2 game.
Academy of Art did not let up and mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Brody Robinson came in and shut down the Urban Knights for the save. The left-handed closer struck out the second batter he faced, got a grounder to shortstop, which scored Art U's third run, and then struck out the next batter to leave the tying run at the plate.
In the series finale, Rinehart retired the side in order in the first, fourth and sixth innings and his offense got him a two-run lead right away. Macy went 2-for-4 in the game, while Norris, Navigato, Porter, Williams, Plaia, Bash and Kyle Oyama all had base hits.
Norris led off the game with a single through the left side and then stole second base. Navigato singled into the right-center gap to put runners at the corners. A double-play grounder scored Norris, and Porter kept the inning going with a walk. Williams tripled into the left-center gap to give the Lancers a 2-0 advantage in the first.
Hungry for more, Macy singled up the middle and stole second to start the third inning. Porter tripled on a full count to score Macy and scored on a squeeze bunt from Tyler Johnson. Bash led off the fourth inning with a leadoff, first-pitch homer to put the Lancers ahead 5-0.
Another CBU run came in the sixth, as Plaia started things off with a one-out single into left field and then stole second base. Oyama came through in a pinch-hit situation and scored Plaia to make it 6-1.
