CLAREMONT, Calif. – Two dominant victories gave 25th-ranked California Baptist University a strong finish to the Claremont Convergence Tournament on Saturday. The Lancers defeated McKendree and Cal State Monterey Bay on respective scores of 18-3 and 12-5. Both wins give CBU a three-game winning streak, as it improves to 10-8 overall.
In the first game of the day with McKendree, the Lancers only out shot the Bearcats by one, 28-27, but were able to net 18 goals, while the Bearcats only found the back of the cage three times. This was in large part because of true freshman goalie Megan Rocha, who posted a whopping 16 saves in the cage.
Offensively, multiple Lancers were able to get in on the scoring action in the opener. Lizette Perez and Abi Auer scored three goals each. Paizlee Dreyer, Jaclyn Meyers, Katie Quon and Brittany McWaid all netted two, while Jocelyn Schwegler, Chase Kelly, Annie Eubanks and Pua Wong each contributed a goal.
In the nightcap, Valeria Spezzaferri and Perez led the charge, each scoring four goals. Spezzaferri also contributed four steals, thus upping her season total to 20 so far. CBU's .387 shooting percentage gave it the 12-5 advantage. Two of the other four goals came from Wong, while Eubanks and Jessica Castellano scored one apiece.
After getting some rest this morning, Lina Medeiros returned to the cage against the Otters and notched 10 saves and three steals to drive the Lancer defense.
CBU returns home to host the two-day Lancer Invite, where it will face the University of Redlands for a 12:30 p.m. match-up on Friday.
