STOCKTON, Calif. — California Baptist University continued conference play with a matchup on the road at ninth-ranked University of the Pacific Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers scored first and pressured the Tigers, but ultimately fell 16-6. No. 25 CBU drops to 15-10 overall, 1-2 in conference, while Pacific improves to 14-7 on the season and 3-0 in Golden Coast Conference play. The Lancers return home Thursday for a conference matchup with Loyola Marymount at 4 p.m.
Valerie Spezzaferri led the Lancers with two goals, two assists, and one steal, while Lina Medeiros produced eight saves and five steals in the cage.
CBU opened with a 1-0 lead off of a deep lob shot from junior Annie Eubanks. Pacific answered to tie it at 1-1, but Spezzaferri shot it cross cage and in on another lob to give the Lancers a 2-1 edge.
The Tigers took advantage of a five-meter penalty shot and a counter attack to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Pacific then opened the second with two even-strength goals to build a 5-2 edge, but Jessica Castellano answered with a goal from distance to close the gap to two.
Jocelyn Schwegler kept the Lancers in the game and ended a three-goal run from Pacific when she cashed in a power-play opportunity on an assist from Spezzaferri, making it 7-4.
Down four at halftime, CBU looked for momentum to open the third and Lizette Perez provided it when she netted a goal off of a pass from Eubanks to make it 8-5. Pacific started to heat up, with Spezzaferri adding one with 26 seconds left in the game to bring about a 16-6 final.
