TEMPE, AZ--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team ended the Malmsten Invitational with a little bit of history as they set an NCAA-era record for most goals in a dominant 30-4 win over the McKendree Bearcats.
CBU finishes the tournament 1-2 with losses to a pair of top-15 teams on opening day. The win moves CBU back over .500 at 3-2 in the early going of the season.
The Lancer offense wasted no time showcasing its skill as Aubrey Newton would be the recipient of some terrific passing on the opening possession for the early 1-0 lead. CBU would tack on two more goals before the Bearcats would get on the board. Julia Almendariz would score twice before the quarter ended as the Lancers led 7-2 after eight minutes. Tyanna Schnieder had an active opening period in goal with a pair of saves and steals as the Lancers dominated early.
CBU's offense experienced no drop-off in the second period, mirroring its first-period output with seven more goals. The Lancer defense was equally terrific, allowing just one goal early in the quarter, taking a commanding 14-3 lead into halftime. The domination continued into the third period as the Lancers pressed on the gas with nine more goals to bring the score to 23-3. Kendall Donahue hopped in goal for the period and would allow no Bearcat goals and nabbed a couple of outstanding saves.
CBU continued to press on into the fourth quarter with efficient offense and would score seven more goals to score an NCAA-era record for most goals scored in a match with 30 as they defeated McKendree 30-4 in Tempe. Multiple Lancers recorded hat tricks, led by Emmie Ramirez with five goals, while Madison Haworth had four. Bailey Rosa recorded a hat trick as well with three goals in the second half, and Almendariz would also have three.
The goalie combination of Schneider and Donahue would allow just four goals, with Schneider allowing three in the first half and Donahue closing out the match in the second half with just one goal allowed.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home next week to face CSUN and Biola on Saturday, January 31, at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
