IRVINE, Calif. – It would have been tough for California Baptist University to play much better in its season opener, as it swept McKendree on scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-15 on Friday at the Concordia (Irvine) Labor Day Invitational.
A number of newcomers played pivotal roles for the Lancers, which has eight new faces on a 17-player roster. CBU was strong on defense and efficient on offense to the tune of a .337 hitting percentage, with 41 kills and 12 errors on 86 attacks, while holding the Lions to a .010 clip (22-21-97). The Lancers also out dug McKendree 45-28. CBU continues the season Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. match with Stanislaus State and a 5 p.m. tilt with fifth-ranked Winona State at Concordia.
Lauren Hackett posted a match-high 14 digs, nine kills, two aces and two blocks for CBU. Twin sisters and University of Arizona beach volleyball transfers Madison Witt and McKenna Witt enjoyed impressive debuts for CBU. Madison logged a match-high 12 kills on a .476 percentage (12-2-21), along with six digs and two blocks, and McKenna finished with six digs and nine kills on a .300 mark (9-3-20).
Sydney Kralj spread the ball around on offense, as five Lancers finished with at least four kills. Kralj contributed 35 assists and seven digs, and Nicci Hinderaker put up nine digs in her debut at libero. Middle blockers Yagoda Jedrzejczak and Sydney Marks added five and four kills, respectively, with Jedrzejczak hitting .300 (5-2-10) and Marks converting four of her six chances for a .667 percentage.
CBU put the first set out of reach early when it opened the match on a 14-3 run. Madison enjoyed an impressive first set, with five kills on seven swings in the game. She had three kills in that opening run, while Hackett and McKenna had two each.
McKendree would only manage to trim its deficit to 15-5, as the Lancers scored three-straight points right after to keep their distance en route to a comfortable win.
In set two, the Lancers opened on another commanding run of 8-3, with three kills coming from Madison and Marks picking up two points of her own on a kill and block. The Lions battled back to within three, 10-7, but CBU kept them at arm's length, with another 8-3 run putting the Lancers up by a wide margin of 18-10. Two kills from McKenna and one from Madison and Jedrzejczak highlighted the set-changing charge.
When McKendree rallied within 21-15 in the second set, a kill and block from Hackett sparked the 4-0 run that put the set away for good.
CBU did not leave any hope and raced out to an 18-5 lead in the third set. It was a total team effort in that set. Hackett and McKenna each had three kills in the opening run to set three, while Jedrzejczak put down three blocks and a kill in that span.
