RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University battled from start to finish and put up some impressive offensive performances, but ultimately fell short to Kansas City in four sets Saturday in the Van Dyne Gym.
Three Lancers logged double-digit kills in the match. Megan Sester matched her career-high, which was first set earlier this week with 21. Summer Avery and Tesa Oaks each notched double-doubles, while Natalie Zimmerer tallied 51 assists for CBU.
Each set and each point was a battle between two of the top teams in the WAC. The Kangaroos pulled out the 25-23, 26-28, 25-22, 25-19 win.
CBU still leads the Western Athletic Conference with a 19-6, 9-3 in conference record, while UMKC moves into a second-place tie at 17-8, 8-3. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (17-8, 8-3) is tied with the Roos, while NM State (17-6, 7-3) gives the WAC four three-loss teams.
The Lancers have four more WAC matches left. Senior Day is up next on Thursday, as CBU hosts Utah Valley for its final home match of the regular season at 7 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym. The Lancers travel to Grand Canyon on Saturday and then UTRGV and NM State to end the WAC season.
Avery's double-double consisted of 15 kills on a .375 percentage (15-3-32) and 12 digs. Oaks added 12 kills and 14 digs, while Nicole Abreu posted a match-high 23 digs, as well, in the loss.
