RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Nicole Abreu set a new NCAA-era record for digs in a season for California Baptist University in the team's final home match of the regular season.
The Lancers honored their two seniors, Katelyn Vander Tuig and Summer Avery, before first serve with Valley Thursday night in the Van Dyne Gym. The Wolverines pulled out the three-set win over CBU (25-23, 25-20, 29-27).
CBU's record moves to 19-7, 9-4 in the Western Athletic Conference in the loss, while Utah Valley improves to 13-11, 5-6. CBU will play its last four matches of the regular season on the road, starting with a trip to Grand Canyon Saturday at 3 p.m.
Abreu had a match-high 11 digs for the Lancers to up her total this season to 432. It topped the previous single-season record of 429 in the NCAA era at CBU (2013-18) set by Becky Moodie in 2014. Abreu has been stellar at libero for the Lancers all year. She has had at least 11 digs in 24 of 26 matches this year and 20 or more seven times.
Offensively, Megan Sester had a team-high 15 kills on a .265 percentage (15-6-34) for CBU. Sydney Marks also had 10 kills on a .286 percentage (10-4-21), four blocks and an ace for the Lancers.
Avery finished her career in Van Dyne with eight kills and seven digs for the Lancers. Natalie Zimmerer was the one who spread around the offense, with 38 assists, five digs and two blocks in just the three sets.
