BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Sophomore Chris Heckenberg found the back of the net for the first time of his Lancer career as California Baptist University ended the season with a 2-1 loss at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday night.
In the 35th minute, freshman Jordan Lane picked up his third assist of the season, as Heckenberg was able to finish the play and put the Lancers up early. CBU maintained the lead and went into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.
The Roadrunners took charge in the second half with goals in the 60th and 69th minutes. CSU Bakersfield was able to hold on despite CBU having several chances late in the game to even the score.
CBU junior goalkeeper Albert Escuin made six saves, which were his second most in a single game this season. Escuin had a season high 10 saves against San Jose State on Oct. 14.
California Baptist finishes its first season at the NCAA Division I level at 9-9-1 overall and 5-6 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Lancers have finished with a .500 or better record seven of the last nine seasons since the 2009 campaign. Meanwhile, CSU Bakersfield improved to 5-12-1 overall and 3-7-1 in league play.
"To take on such a challenging transition with 12 freshmen and so many key guys from last year gone is a huge challenge but one we responded to," Michaelson said. "We would have liked a few more wins but no one doubts we belong at this level. We are thankful to our five seniors, but they'll be the first to say that we return so much quality next year that it's only up from here. We are excited for a big future for this young group of players."
