LONG BEACH, Calif. – A balanced attack, with six players in double-figures scoring, led California Baptist University to the first win of its NCAA Division I era Friday night at Long Beach State.
The Lancers earned the 85-83 win in dramatic fashion over the 49ers in the Walter Pyramid, thanks a big 51-30 advantage in rebounds and contributions up and down the roster. CBU improves to 1-1 on the year, while Long Beach State, which was picked to finish fourth in the Big West Conference starts the year 0-1.
"That was a crazy game, it was back and forth, with lots of big plays," Coach Jarrod Olson said. "It was a great team win, there was really good resilience and belief from the team. I was really proud of how we kept coming and found a way to win."
CBU faces another Big West foe on Tuesday, with Cal State Fullerton visiting the CBU Events Center for a 6 p.m. tip.
"Long Beach is a tough team and to get our first win on the road there is great for our program," Olson said.
Both Britney Thomas and Tiena Afu pulled down double-doubles in the win. Thomas had 15 rebounds and 12 points for second double-double in as many games, while Afu added 11 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
Ane Olaeta, Georgia Dale, Delacy Brown and Lexy Ram all gave big contributions to CBU, as well. Olaeta notched a team-high 16 points, while Dale was all over the box score with 14 points, seven assists and four steals. Brown tallied 14 points and eight rebounds, while Ram chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.
Caitlyn Harper had her hands all over and finished with five points, four assists and three steals in just 13 minutes of action.
It was quite a turnaround performance for the Lancers after they trailed Long Beach State led by as many as 13, 25-12, with 2:10 left in the first quarter. CBU cut its deficit all the way down to 25-22 with a 10-0 run. Dale and Brown made up the run with five points each.
The 49ers found a way to increase their lead back to 14, 44-30, with 5:38 left in the first half. CBU had another response and came all the way back again with to cut its deficit down to 48-47 at the break. The Lancers turned things around with a 15-0 onslaught that included eight points from Olaeta and five from Dale.
CBU scored first in the third quarter and never gave up its lead, eventually taking a 66-56 advantage into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was back-and-forth, with three ties and two lead changes over the final 10 minutes.
Both teams were level at 81-81 with 2:04 to play. Brown came up with a layup off a Dale assist to give CBU an 83-81 edge. On the ensuing possession, Dale came up with a huge steal on a pass and took it all the way for a layup and some insurance, up 85-81 with 1:33 remaining.
Long Beach State managed one more bucket, but both defenses locked in over the final minute of play. Dale secured the win for CBU with a huge block with 10 seconds left in regulation.
"So many people played a big part tonight, but none bigger than Georgia," Olson said. "She made some great plays tonight."
