Six Lancers Qualify for D-II Championship

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Six California Baptist University runners are headed to the NCAA Division II Championship Meet next week in Charlotte, N.C., May 24-26, after the NCAA announced the field Tuesday afternoon. This year, four female runners and two male athletes will compete at the championship meet, where three veterans will be looking to lead the charge.
Juniors Simon Bedard and Pierre-Louis Detourbe are the lone male Lancers, as both individuals will be making their Division II Championship Meet debuts.
Bedard qualified for the 1500-meter event, while Detourbe clinched a spot for the 3K Steeplechase. Detourbe bettered his top time in the 3K steeplechase by six seconds, when crossed the finish line in nine minutes, 1.07 seconds at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Bedard's time of 3:46.37 currently ranks eighth out of 15 runners, where he will be looking to prolong his successful season with another strong performance.
CBU is no stranger to the postseason, as all four Lancers on the women's side have made the trip before. Emeline Delanis, Fruzsi Ladanyi, Anett Somogyi will make their second consecutive appearance in the Championship Meet, while Berenice Cleyet-Merle will make her third appearance, looking to lead her fellow Lancers.
Cleyet-Merle is a three-time All-American, who holds records in the 1500m and 800-meter events, and joins Ladanyi and Somogyi as qualifiers in this year's 1500-meter heat.
Delanis qualified for the 3K steeplechase and 5K, where she recently shattered the previous CBU record by almost 30 seconds, as she posted a time of 16:8.21 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in the 5K heat.
More All-American distinctions will be coveted by CBU, as Delanis and Cleyet-Merle were both honored in last year's Division II Championship Meet.
The championship meet will take place at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte. Johnson C. Smith University will serve as host for the championships.
