RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After establishing California Baptist University as a team to be reckoned with on the course and on the track, Dr. Ben Gall has decided to walk away from full time coaching. He has accepted a faculty position at Northwest Nazarene, where Gall previously coached at for 10 years.
"Coach Gall has been a blessing to CBU athletics," said Director of Athletics, Dr. Micah Parker. "Under his leadership our cross country and track teams won many championships and excelled in the classroom as well. He leaves our program in great shape. We all wish Ben and his family the best in his new career."
Gall was named the cross country and distance track programs head coach in 2012 and kept pace over the past six years.
With Gall at the helm, CBU's cross country team won an unprecedented 11 PacWest Conference Championships – six consecutive on the men's side and five with the women, including the last four in a row. He is a seven-time PacWest Cross Country Coach of the Year and has coached seven individual PacWest Champions, including the conference's first freshman to win the race in Anett Somogyi in 2016.
There have been 61 All-PacWest cross country runners, eight All-West Region runners and three All-American runners on the men's side. For the women, Gall has coached 53 All-PacWest cross country honorees, 10 All-West Region runners and four All-American runners.
This past fall, both of Gall's programs qualified for the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship meet, with the men taking fifth and the women grabbing third – the highest finishes for both teams in program history. The women also won the program's first NCAA Division II West Region Championship that season.
On the track, CBU has produced six national champions, 33 All-Americans, 18 individual conference champions and 50 all-conference performances with Gall at the helm. Six Lancers qualified for their last Division II Championship with Emeline Delanis (fourth in 5K), Simon Bedard (sixth in 1500m) and Pierre-Louis Detourbe (sixth in 3K steeplechase), each grabbing All-American honors.
A national search will begin immediately.
