SAN DIEGO — Coming off an explosive win on Friday, California Baptist University turned right around and faced the University of San Diego Monday night. The Lancers battled for 90 minutes, but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Toreros.
CBU sits at 2-2-0 on the year, while USD improves to 1-2-1 overall.
"After losing to two of the top teams in the country, we knew USD would come out desperate to win," said Coach Coe Michaelson of the Toreros, who lost to No. 2 Duke and No. 8 UCLA. "We looked a bit shell shocked in the first half, but second half we were much improved and I thought we were the better team. We fought until the end and almost got something from it, but in the end, it's hard to win on the road against a top-50 RPI caliber team without playing 90 minutes of good soccer."
Goalkeeper Gage Rogers had to make numerous saves early on to keep his team in the game, but it was the Toreros who would get on the board first. San Diego scored in the 39th minute to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Just before the break, CBU looked like it might get the equalizer. After drawing a foul 30 yards out, Matthias Binder stepped up to the free kick and curled it toward the far post. There was just a little too much on it, however, as it just went over the crossbar.
The Lancers started the second half hungry for a goal and tried to keep the ball in Torero territory. Unfortunately, USD tacked on an insurance goal in the 71st minute to increase its lead to 2-0.
Still, the Lancers kept fighting. Binder fired off a shot from 40 yards out, forcing the Torero goalkeeper to push it wide and out of the net.
In the 84th minute, Preston Judd broke the scoreless streak. George Ionascu stole the ball away in Torero territory, allowing Judd to run onto it. He beat a defender and the goalkeeper to tuck away his seventh goal of the season and cut the score to 2-1.
It gave CBU new life down the stretch, despite the clock winding down.
Nicklas Haakenstad gave CBU a chance from distance, but the goalkeeper made the save to keep his team in front by one goal.
The Lancers pushed the tempo for the remaining three minutes, but time expired before they could find a goal to force extra time, resulting in the 2-1 loss.
CBU kicks off on Friday at 4:00 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton, finally home at Lancer Soccer Field after four games on the road.
"It's hard to win a game of this difficulty after the travel we have had so we are excited for our home opener on Friday," said Michaelson.
