Lancers Rout Rebels In Sunday Shutout
10/6/2019 4:50:00 PM | Men's Soccer
It only took 14 minutes for the Lancers to post their first goal of the match.
Despite finishing the 2018 season at 10-10-1, the Rebels entered todays contest 2-9 overall (0-2 WAC) and on a season long 5-game losing streak. A trend they would not buck today.
Brian Gonzalez sliced and diced his way through a trio of Rebel defenders and placed his shot just inside the far goal post to open up the scoring. His goal was assisted by Daniel Johnsson, his first of the season.

The score would remain 1-0 going into halftime, but the Lancers would add to it early in the second half. Less than four minutes into half number two, Niklas Haakenstad took a perfectly passed ball from Victor Aguirre and tucked it into the far post to extend the Lancer lead to 2-0.

That goal would be the first of three within a seven-minute flurry by CBU. Their third goal came off the foot of season points leader Tete Vacas, who played a little give-and-go with Sebastian Wiesbock which eventually opened up to a one-on-one with the Rebel keeper. The goalie never had a chance with Vacas taking the shot from six yards out.

The fourth goal of the day brought the Lancers to their final tally when Aguirre added a score to his earlier assist, netting a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the top right corner of the net.

The flood gates have officially opened! Victor Aguirre adds a goal to his earlier assist, scoring off a set piece from just outside the 18-yard box! CBU leads 4-0 with just under 27 minutes left!#LanceUp⚔️ pic.twitter.com/hgfSY0alVH
The four goal effort marked the second time this season that the Lancers had four different players record a goal in a game. The first was another 4-0 win back on Sept. 1 at Purdue – Fort Wayne. Vacas, Gonzalez, and Aguirre were all repeats on the goal list.
The offensive explosion was noteworthy, but so to was another Albert Escuin five save shutout. Today's match brought him to three on the year, and two in a row after Friday's 110 minute scoreless game against Grand Canyon.
This brings his career total to six shutouts in less than two seasons, which lands him tied for seventh all-time, and third in the NCAA era.
It is the first time in the program's short D-I history that the Lancers have recorded back-to-back shutouts, and the first time since October 26 and 28 & November 2, 2017, when they did it three games in a row.
Head Coach Coe Michaelson was optimistic about what this result will mean for his Lancers moving forward.
"I'm just really happy for the guys today. We've been on the wrong side of some bad luck this year and we have just been preaching to keep working, keep improving and the reward is just around the corner. We've had a few good weeks of training and improvement and today it just finally clicked. There are no easy games at this level and the guys did a great job of making sure by getting the clean sheet and creating loads of scoring opportunities. It's nice to win and hopefully after a good weekend we can take this momentum into a tough road trip next week."
The Lancers will look to keep this the new normal as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Air Force on Thursday, Oct. 10, and Orem, UT, to face off with Utah Valley on Saturday, Oct. 12. Game times are scheduled for 6:00 pm and 5:00 pm Pacfic, respectively.
