| By:

RIVERSIDE --- With a week of games under its belt, California Baptist University's men's basketball team is headed to the Lone Star State to face the University of Texas on Nov. 12 before making the trek up north to square up with the University of California - Berkeley on Nov. 15.

The Lancers opened their 2019-20 season with heavy-handed wins over Jackson State (93-70) and Cal Lutheran (112-56). The two games brought in record-breaking crowds to the CBU Events Center, as opening night saw 4,976 fans pack the house for the second-largest attended game in the state of California on opening night. Three days later, Lancer Nation was at full capacity, outdoing itself from Tuesday's game with a sellout crowd of 5,050 fans.

CBU will take its undefeated record on the road, with first-time matchups against the Longhorns and the Golden Bears. Both games will be the first counting games between the two programs. The Lancers faced Cal during the 2016-17 season in an exhibition game that resulted in favor of the Golden Bears, 81-73.

Texas tipped off its season with a victory over Northern Colorado, 69-45, on opening night and followed that up with an upset win over No. 23/22 Purdue, 70-66, on Nov. 9. The four-point victory over the Boilermakers snapped their 18-game home court win streak, which entered the season as the fourth-longest in the nation. The Longhorns were led by Matt Coleman III on the night, as the junior point guard finished with a game-high 22 points and seven assists.

The Longhorns are entering their 114th season of men's basketball with an all-time record of 1,789-1,088 (.622). The Longhorns finished the 2018-19 season as NIT Champions with an overall record of 21-16.  Texas ended the regular season a year ago having lost four of its last five games before falling to Kansas in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals.  In the NIT, the Longhorns posted a 5-0 record with victories over South Dakota State, Xavier, Colorado, TCU and Lipscomb. The 2019-20 roster is young at heart, with eight underclassmen and five upperclassmen. Texas will be led by Coleman III and Jase Febres, as the duo came back to Austin as the two returning starters.

Notable Notes:

  • Head Coach Shaka Smart enters his fifth season at the helm of the Longhorns with an overall record of 71-66.
  • Saturday's win over Purdue not only snapped an 18-game home court win streak but also snapped Purdue's 20-game non-conference home court win streak.
  • The Boilermakers entered the Nov. 9 matchup against Texas with a 32-1 record at the Mackey Arena with their only previous loss to Ohio State in 2018, 64-63.
  • The Longhorns have three players averaging 10 or more points per game.
  • Coleman III leads the team with 16.0 points per game and 4.0 assists per game.
  • Gerald Liddell is the team's leader in rebounds (8.0) and is second on the team in scoring (14.0).
  • Andrew Jones is the Longhorns' sixth man off the bench and is third in scoring with 13.5 points per game.
