RIVERSIDE --- Head coach Kyle Getter has begun the process of assembling his inaugural coaching staff, with three additions being announced this week. Getter, who was announced last week as the 13th head coach in CBU Men's Basketball history, has added an Associate Head Coach and two assistants to the bench for the 2026-27 season.
A key theme to the coaching staff additions is Getter's relationship with Liberty University coach Ritchie McKay. Getter spent three seasons on McKay's staff at Liberty.
Joining the CBU coaching staff as Associate Head Coach is Vic Sfera. Sfera comes to the Lancers after spending last season with Lipscomb University in Tennessee. The Bison finished 19-13 in Sfera's one season in Nashville, including a 12-6 mark in ASUN Conference action.
Before joining the Lipscomb staff, Sfera spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Charlotte. During his time in Charlotte, the 49ers achieved their first top-three finish since 2006 and tied program records with 13 conference victories and 13 home wins. The 49ers also achieved their first ranked victory since 2013, a 70-68 win against No. 17 Florida Atlantic.
Sfera spent two seasons at Liberty, crossing paths with Getter during a span that saw the Flames win 43 games and reach the Big South Championship Game. He added four seasons under coach Tony Bennett at Virginia, two as a Technology Assistant, and two as the Director of Scouting/Recruiting. The Cavaliers made three NCAA Tournament appearances during Sfera's tenure, including a trip to the Elite Eight.
"Vic is someone I worked closely with while we were assistants at Liberty," said Getter. "He possesses an incredible attention to detail, ability to cultivate relationships, and a strong ability to communicate. He is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff. I am excited to welcome Vic, his wife Rachel, and their sons Lucas and Clay to CBU."
Sfera is a Southern California native, having played collegiately at MiraCosta College in Oceanside.
Getter also announced the addition of assistant coaches Joe Pierre III and Gabriel McKay.
Pierre comes to Riverside after spending last season on the bench at Furman University. The Paladins finished 22-13 last season, highlighted by a 76-61 victory over ETSU in the Southern Conference Championship Game. Furman, like CBU, qualified for the NCAA Tournament but was eliminated in the First Round, losing 82-71 to Connecticut.
Before joining the Furman staff, Pierre spent seven seasons at Liberty University, helping the Flames to a 177-58 record, six regular-season conference titles, and four conference tournament championships. Pierre's primary roles with the Flames included coordinating the program's defense and recruiting efforts.
The Flames featured a defense that ranked in the top 31 nationally in scoring defense in each of Pierre's final five seasons. His final season, the 2024-25 campaign, saw the Flames possess the No. 11 defense in Division I.
Before joining the Liberty staff, Pierre served as a Graduate Assistant/Video Coordinator at Middle Tennessee. In 2017, the Blue Raiders made it to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Pierre is a graduate of Oklahoma State, where he served as a student manager from 2011-15.
"I am excited to welcome Joe, his wife Caroline, and their children Joseph IV, and Annelise to CBU," added Getter. "Joe brings a wealth of experience, both in terms of on-floor coaching and recruiting. His character is second to none, and he has a tremendous ability to develop strong relationships. Joe has won at every stop, Middle Tennessee, Liberty, and Furman, and he is a major addition to our staff."
The third addition to the staff, Gabriel McKay, joins the Lancers after spending last season as a Graduate Assistant under coach Mark Pope at Kentucky. The Wildcats finished 22-14 and ended their season in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament after an overtime victory against Santa Clara in the First Round.
McKay grew up around the game of basketball as his father, Ritchie, has been the head coach at Liberty since 2015. McKay played under his father for three seasons at Liberty, appearing in 86 games at the Division I level. He also played two seasons at Trevecca Nazarene, appearing in 45 games.
"Gabriel is a rising star in this business," added Getter. "He has an incredible gift for people, and his energy and drive are unmatched. He is an integral piece of our coaching staff. I am excited to welcome Gabriel and his fiancée, Abbie, to CBU."
Season tickets for the 2026-27 season are already on sale and can be purchased HERE. The Lancers will begin a new era next season as CBU makes the jump from the WAC to the Big West Conference.
