LOS ANGELES – A trio of top-three and two runner-up finishes made for another strong day for California Baptist University at the Pepperdine Winter Invite.
The Lancers finished second in the 200-yard medley relay, 100 backstroke and took third in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday at East Los Angeles College. Jacob Leahy, Sean Foster, Josh Walters and Matthew Niculae took second in the 200-medley relay with a time of one minute, 28.67 seconds.
All four had top-six swims for the Lancers individually, as well. Leahy's strong weekend continued with a second-place swim in the 100 backstroke. It was perhaps the most impressive event for the day for CBU, as its top-three swimmers all logged top-10 times in the event.
Leahy took second in 47.68 seconds, which ranks second in Lancer history, second only to his personal record of 46.99. Niculae took ninth in 49.92, nearly updating his PR (49.89) for the 10th fastest time ever for CBU. True freshman Trent Itow matched the previous 10th-best time for the Lancers to take 10th in 49.96.
Foster swam a historically significant time in the 100 breaststroke, as well, taking third in 54.93. It is the fifth-best time in CBU history, but still a bit off his best of 54.05.
Walters took fifth in the 100 butterfly in 48.47, while the Lancers' David Miller also took ninth (48.96). Both times rank in the top seven in CBU's record books.
Robert Moseley and Colton Babcock teamed up with Leahy and Niculae in the 800-free relay, and it led to a fifth-place finish (6:45.68). Niculae also took sixth in the 200 free (1:39.81), while Ryan Schade had another top-10 swim for CBU in the 100 breast (56.99).
