LOS ANGELES – California Baptist University secured its top finish of the weekend at the Pepperdine Winter Invite on Saturday at East Los Angeles College.
It came when the Lancers took fourth place in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Mackenzie Degn, Mackenzie Mergel, Isabella Rhodes and Rebeca Oviedo took fourth place in seven minutes, 31.24 seconds.
CBU totaled eight top-10 swims on day two of the meet, which includes UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly, San Diego, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.
The Lancers were particularly sharp in relays, as they also took sixth in the 200-medley relay on a 1:43.98 time posted by Emily Longfellow, Faith Brazil, Nicole Cienega and Hannah Houlton.
There were several top-10 times posted by CBU in individual events, as well. Cienega updated her season-best in the 100 butterfly after she took sixth in 55.87, which is a top-five time in Lancer history. Rhodes took 11th place in the consolation finals of the event, but did so in 55.59, which ranks third in CBU's record book and is not far off her personal record (55.32).
Oviedo and Degn both finished in the top-10 of the 200 freestyle with top-10 times in CBU's records. Oviedo took sixth in 1:50.77, while Degn took ninth in the consolation finals in 1:49.48 to improve upon her best time this season in the event (1:52.12). Both rank in the Lancers' top-five historically.
Brazil, a true freshman, took eighth in the 100 breast, but did so with an impressive time of 1:03.58. It ranks second all-time for the Lancers behind Alena Rumiantceva's record of 1:01.83 set in the 2014-15 season.
Longfellow also posted a top-three time in the 100 back, as she took ninth in 56.23. The Lancers' Alina Jungklaus (4:30.43) and Morgan Giordano (4:31.49) both finished in the top-11 of the 400 individual medley.
