LOS ANGELES – Three third-place finishes ended the Pepperdine Winter Invite strong for California Baptist University on Sunday.
Buse Topcu, Faith Brazil and the Lancers' 400-free relay team of Rebeca Oviedo, Vianka Hoyer, Mackenzie Degn and Isabella Rhodes all posted third-place finishes on the final day of the meet at East Los Angeles College.
"We had a really good third day and rallied for a lot of points to take third place and beat some really strong teams," Coach Rick Rowland said. "There were a lot of really good swims today."
Brazil updated her season best in the 200-yard breaststroke and clocked the second-fastest time in CBU history, as she took third in two minutes, 18.18 seconds. It trails only Alena Rumiantceva's program record of 2:12.82 set at altitude in 2014-15.
The 200 breast was the deepest of the day for the Lancers, as Emma Lindquist took seventh (2:21.38) and Alexa Melara came in eighth (2:21.44). Lindquist swam a 2:21.01 in the prelims, which updated her personal best (2:21.76) and ranks seventh in CBU's top-10 record book.
"We really showed our depth in the breaststroke," Rowland said. "We rested for about a week or week and a half for this meet and put on tech suits, and it paid off."
Topcu took third in the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:53.60, while Oviedo also came in fifth (16:57.63). Oviedo ended the day with Hoyer, Degn and Rhodes in the 400-free relay, as the group took third in 3:24.35.
Three Lancers finished in the top-11 of the 100 free, with Rhodes taking ninth (50.57), Degn 10th (50.74) and Hannah Houlton 11th (51.59). Nicole Cienega ended her week by taking 10th in the 200 butterfly in 2:03.88, which ranks seventh in CBU history.
"The freshmen are looking good," Rowland said of Degn, Houlton, Cienega, Hoyer, Brazil and Lexie Walling. "A lot of our veterans coming to race each and every time, too. A lot of our returning swimmers are way ahead of last year with their times near the middle of the season. I am pretty excited about where we are at this point."
