RIVERSIDE -- California Baptist University bid farewell to four senior's from the men's soccer team this afternoon and followed it up with a strong 3-1 victory against CSU Bakersfield to close out the 2019 season.
Victor Aguirre, Albert Escuin, Linus Mansson, and Sebastian Wiesbock were all honored prior to the game at Lancer Field.
They immediately went to work and the Lancers wasted no time opening up the scoring, as Brian Gonzalez found the back of the net within the first minute of the game. Assisted by Daniel Johnsson, the goal was clocked in at 42 seconds was actually the second-fastest goal scored this season. The top honor belongs to the senior Aguirre, who scored in 37 seconds against UC Riverside on Sept. 6.
Albert Escuin notched another 10-save game, the fourth time in his career and third time this year. He claimed the same feat against Cal State Fullerton and Air Force.
California Baptist eventually allowed a goal late in the second half, but recovered its lead just a minute and 20 seconds later when Oliver Brynues found a streaking Jerry Ramirez for the game-winner. The assist gave Bryneus five on the year, the clear assist king for the season, with Aguirre landing second on the list with three.
Reuben Dass sealed the deal with a late insurance goal in the 89th minute off of a gorgeous through ball from Chris Heckenberg. The score was Dass' fourth goal of the season, tying him with Vacas and Gonzalez for the team lead.
"We were excellent in the first half and really should have put the game away, but Bakersfield made a tactical change at halftime that we struggled with. But, we responded nicely and it was fantastic to get the win on Senior Day," Coach Coe Michaelson said after the game. "This group has been through a ton of adversity this year, but our four seniors have been a shining example to all of the younger guys. They are all four great players, but I am much more proud of the leaders and men that they have become here at CBU."
The Lancers end the year with a 5-5-1 record in the WAC. Wiesbock was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, Escuin has worked his way onto multiple Lancer and WAC top-10 lists, and in graduating just four seniors, the CBU men's soccer team will be loaded with returning talent for the 2020 season, sure to make a strong run for the WAC regular-season title.
