RESULTS
OREM, Utah – A pair of top-three finishes in the steeplechase highlighted day two of the Western Athletic Conference Championships for California Baptist University on Friday.
Emilie Renaud became the first WAC track champion in the history of the women's program by winning the steeplechase, while Linda Palumbo was not far off to take third place for the Lancers at Utah Valley.
"I am very proud of both Emilie and Linda for running very tough, gritty races in finishing first and third," Coach Adam Tribble said. "It was another race where the pace was taken out fast but they held their composure and competed very well."
Renaud stretched out a pretty big lead, but was pushed late by NM State's Elana Kresl in the final lap. Renaud gave one strong final push to pull away from her and take first by more than four seconds with a time of 10 minutes, 58.40 seconds.
Kresl finished second in 11:02.66, while Palumbo crossed in 11:09.25 to take third and hold off Grand Canyon's Paige Hildebrandt (11:10.81) with a strong finish of her own.
"I couldn't be happier for them both – super job," Tribble said.
Even without a full team, the Lancers' men and women are still in fifth place. The women have now totaled 27 points for advantages on Kansas City (18.50) and Seattle U (12) in the team standings. The men have 14 points for advantages on CSU Bakersfield (13) and Seattle U (2).
The Lancers were also represented in the 800-meter by Fruzsi Ladanyi and Mike Alukunyang on Friday. Ladanyi was unable to finish the race, while Alukunyang took 14th overall in the prelims in 1:58.56.
CBU concludes the WAC Championships in the men's and women's 1500 and 5000-meter races on Saturday. Live video coverage is available on ESPN+ and the WAC Digital Network streaming, as well, for international viewers. Live results are also available through HY-TEK.
