PITTSBURGH, Pa. --- The CBU men's soccer team finished up its East Coast swing by challenging the Duquesne University Dukes at Rooney Field Sunday.
Tete Vacas put a shot on goal in just the second minute of action, but Duquesne's response was a goal less than a minute later taking advantage of a mishandled ball at the top of the CBU box. Vacas would put another pair of shots on target in the first half, but was unable to net any of them.
The Dukes extended their lead in the 33rd minute after a foul called on CBU goalkeeper Albert Escuin resulted in a yellow card and a penalty kick.
At halftime, the Lancers had produced plenty of chances, taking eight shots and putting five of them on goal, but were still looking to break through on the scoreboard.
A shift in the game ensued in the 50th minute when Vacas put his fourth shot attempt in the back of the goal, cutting the Duquesne lead in half. The goal was assisted by Niklas Haakenstad, his first of the season.
The Lancers would get eight more shots in the half, five of which were on goal, but the Dukes keeper would answer with five saves to seal the victory for his side.
"Unfortunately we are making a habit of gifting teams goals that we aren't making them earn," head coach Coe Michaelson reflected. "With that said our second half today was our best effort of the year and is something to build on. More games played like the second half will lead to a lot of wins, so it's vital to learn and take something from this because it was something to build on. Their goalkeeper made some huge saves and we were really unfortunate not to take something from the game, but now it's necessary to clean up the mistakes and turn the overall quality of our play into wins."
Duquense remains undefeated on the season, with all four of its wins captured by a single goal.
Now sitting at 1-4-1 on the season, the Lancers will return home for a single game next week as they host Gonzaga, whom CBU defeated in their first ever meeting last season, winning convincingly by a score of 5-2 in Spokane.
