Lancers Closeout WAC Opening Trip
1/4/2020 1:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball
EDINBURG – Saturday's game pitted strength on strength with the WAC's best offense in the Lancers against the league's leading defense in UT Rio Grande Valley. One lopsided quarter wrote the story for the Lancers as they fell to the Vaqueros 87-68, dropping them to 8-8 on the season and 0-2 in the WAC.
The teams played a close first quarter, but the Vaqueros offense was too hot to handle in the second quarter.
The Vaqueros opened the second frame with a 17-6 spurt and never let up. UTRGV was efficient in the second, shooting 55.6 percent (10-18) overall from the field and 66.7 percent (6-9) from beyond the arc.
CBU made a rally push in the third quarter, getting back within 10 points, but the Vaqueros would squash that threat and increase their lead before the end of the quarter.
Delacy Brown scored in double-digits for the fourth time in five games, leading the Lancers with 16 points.
Georgia Dale was the only other CBU player to score double-digits with 11, pairing that with seven rebounds.
The Lancers tallied 11 steals in the game, but 15 Vaquero offensive rebounds, five of which came in that big second quarter, was a hole too deep for the Lancers to dig out of.
UT Rio Grande Valley came into the game as the conference's leading defense and proved it by holding the Lancers under their season averages in all categories.
UTRGV also scored a season-high in points against a Division I school in this game, besting its average by 23 points.
The Lancers will open up conference play at home against CSU Bakersfield (Jan. 8 at 6:00 pm) and Grand Canyon (Jan. 11 at 1:00 pm).
