RIVERSIDE – Ane Olaeta was short just a pair of assists and a rebound from recording her first career triple-double in California Baptist University's contest against the Western Athletic Conference leading CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners on Wednesday night.
Olaeta logged 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in a 66-61 loss to CSU Bakersfield in the CBU Events Center. It was the second time this season she has gotten as close to a triple-double, as she had 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 23.
It was Georgia Dale who the Lancers' scorers with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Delacy Brown scored seven of her 11 points in the third quarter on perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the field. Brown has now scored in double-digits in the past three games and five of the past six.
The game was within reach for the Lancers for most of the 40 minutes, and they forced a two-point game three times in the fourth quarter.
CBU trailed by a game high 10 points with a minute to go in the third quarter, but clawed back on the heels of Dale and Lexy Ram, who combined to score 14 of the Lancers next 16 points. A three-pointer from Dale made it a three-point game, 57-54, Bakersfield lead with 4:09 left in regulation.
Sydney Palma was then fouled beyond the arc and drained all three free throws to give the Lancers new life, down 59-57, with two minutes and 42 seconds to go.
CBU held CSU Bakersfield starters largely in check, but the Roadrunner bench came up big with 44 points, scoring 24 of their team's 35 points in the second half.
The Lancers will return to the CBU Events Center on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. game against Grand Canyon. Each team will be searching for their first conference win, the Lancers (8-9, 0-3 in conference) in their fourth WAC contest while Saturday will mark just the second conference game for the Lopes (5-7, 0-1).
