CLAREMONT, Calif. – California Baptist University opened the outdoor track season with 3,000-meter competition on Saturday afternoon at the Collegiate All Comers, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. Ivo Balabanov and Emilie Renaud made their mark early this season, with both winning the 3,000-meter title at Strehle Track.
Balabanov had as memorable of a collegiate track debut as possible, breaking the school record with an 8 minute, 21.15 second time. Balabanov won the race fairly handily, beating out the second place finisher by more than four seconds.
Running unattached, Florian LePallec took third with an 8:26.55 time in his first attempt on the track. Zlatko Kozuhar, the lone returner in the men's race, took sixth (8:31.58) and set a new personal best, followed by Henrique Neves in seventh (8:35.18).
One of the newest additions to the CBU's roster, Rikus Van Niekerk, grabbed an 11th place finish (8:40.43) in his first action as a Lancer. Cameron Hylton (22nd, 8:49.41) and Aris Valerio wrapped up the men's 3,000-meter for the Lancers.
Renaud broke a school and personal record (9:36.03) in her attempt at the 3,000-meter on Saturday, leaving the competition in the dust with a 35 second gap between her and the second place finisher.
CBU takes a three week break from competition before competing just up the road at the RCC Invitational on March 6th.
