BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – California Baptist University embarked on its first road trip of the 2020 season, defeating Villanova in game one before falling to No. 15 Indiana in game two at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center on Saturday.
CBU recorded the second largest margin of victory of the young season, defeating Villanova 17-7 to extend the winning streak to four. The streak came to an end with a 7-15 defeat at the hands of the host, No. 15 Indiana.
Kira O'Donell had another big day, scoring five goals and getting three assists, including a hat-trick performance against the Hoosiers. That was O'Donell's third hat-trick of the year, and extended her multi-goal-game tally to six after a two goal outing against Villanova in the early game. With Saturday's performance, O'Donell moves to fifth in career goal totals in the NCAA-era and moved to sixth in career assists.
The Lancers will look to get back to their winning ways tomorrow, as the Indiana Classic concludes with a matchup against Saint Francis (PA) at 7:30 a.m., Pacific.
Maddie Meza had a game to remember in game one, finding the back of the net for the first time this season to open the scoring after two goal-less possessions for both teams in the early minutes. Meza would not stop there, however, scoring two more goals in a one minute span in the second period to record her first career hat-trick. The senior utility had one more left in her, doubling her previous career high for goals in a game when she scored a fourth early in the third period.
Grace Ramirez helped CBU on the defensive end to put the game away early, only allowing two past her, including a shutout second period, while saving nine in the first half to give the Lancers a 10-2 advantage after the first 16 minutes.
CBU swapped roles in game two, falling six goals behind the Hoosiers in an 8-2 first period. Things evened out a little more in the second through fourth periods, but it was too-little-too-late with Indiana grabbing the 15-7 victory.
