RIVERSIDE – Saturday's 62-53 win over Utah Valley was a milestone for California Baptist University women's basketball in many ways. It marks the first time in program history the team has started a season on a double-digit win streak, the first time the team has started 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, and gives the Lancers a 13-game active win streak, the fourth-best mark in the nation.
CBU joins North Carolina State, Stanford and Texas A&M as the only teams in the country with unblemished records and 10 or more wins. Led by senior guard Ane Olaeta, who re-gained the top-spot in the nation in terms of assists today after adding another six to bring her season total to 79, the Lancers are firing on all cylinders as they prepare to make their first conference road trip of the season.
The Lancers had to work a bit harder for today's win. The Wolverines kept it a one-possession game for much of the first half until CBU closed the second quarter on a 9-1 run to build a 10-point lead going into halftime.
The second half saw Britney Thomas score nine of her 11 points after she was kept in check for much of the first half with foul trouble. Sydney Palma and Olaeta paced the Lancers early, each scoring nine points in the first half and combining to go 3-3 from beyond the arc.
SERIES RECAP
CBU's defense held Utah Valley to their two worst shooting outputs all season. The Wolverines managed to go just 43-126 (34.1 percent) from the field overall this week. The Lancers also combined for 13 blocks and 17 steals over the past two games.
Thomas averaged a team high 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds against UVU, while Nicole Avila-Ambrosi (11.5), Taylor Wu (10.5), and Olaeta (10.0) also averaged double-digit scoring in the series. Olaeta added 14 assists to her staggering season total, but Palma wasn't far behind with 13 dimes of her own.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lancers will pack their bags and visit newly minted WAC members Tarleton St. in Stephenville, Texas, for another back-to-back series tipping off at 2 p.m. and 11 a.m. Pacific on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
