RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team opened up conference play with a dominating 82-51 victory over the Utah Valley Wolverines on Monday night behind an excellent shooting night from the perimeter.
The Lancers end their six-game slide to get to 7-7 and begin conference play a perfect 1-0. Utah Valley, meanwhile, drops to 7-5 overall and 0-1 to start conference action.
The Lancers were locked in from the jump from the perimeter, burying three, including their first two field goals, to take a 17-8 lead in the opening frame. CBU would start to blow the game open in the second period with scoring runs of 10-0 and 7-3 to take a 39-20 lead into halftime. The Lancer defense made its statement in the first half by forcing the Wolverines to shoot under 30% from the floor and forcing 13 UVU turnovers.
The Wolverines made a push in the third quarter to attempt to climb back into the game with a 9-0 run to end the frame and cut the deficit down to just 12 as they entered the fourth quarter. CBU would hit the Wolverines with a three-point barrage in the final period as they would connect on eight of their 11 triples and shot 73% overall in the period to shoot Utah Valley out of the building. True freshman Marta De La Fuente would put the finishing touches on the blowout with her first collegiate basket to finalize the 82-51 final in Riverside.
CBU finished with four players in double figures, led by a 20-point night from freshman Lauren Olsen. Olsen shot over 50% from the floor in the victory while connecting on four triples. Filipa Barros was the player of the night with a well-rounded game. Barros scored 16 points on well over 50% shooting and would collect a game-high 13 rebounds while also dishing out eight assists. Barros also flexed her defensive muscles with four steals and finished the game as a +23 from the floor.
Grace Schmidt made her first home start of the season after returning from injury and made the most of it with 13 points on 5-8 shooting, also collecting a season-best eight rebounds. Khloe Lemon would be the final double-digit scorer with 13 points off the bench. CBU would outshoot UVU 46%-32% from the field and would hold a 39-point advantage in scoring from the perimeter. The turnover battle was a point of emphasis coming in, as the Wolverines led the nation in steals and forced turnovers. However, the Lancers flipped that narrative by forcing 21 UVU turnovers compared to just 16 for them.
NEXT: The Lancers will be back in action on New Year's Day as they host UT Arlington for a 1 PM tip-off at the Fowler Events Center.
