
CBU Hangs Around Early But Ultimately Falls to #23 Nebraska on the Road

LINCOLN, NE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team concluded its non-conference schedule on Sunday afternoon as they battled the unbeaten #23 Nebraska Cornhuskers at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska by a score of 87-56.
The Lancers hung around through three quarters, but a massive fourth period from Nebraska would push the Cornhuskers to 12-0. CBU concludes non-conference play 6-7 as they fell to the Cornhuskers, who were CBU's sixth-ever ranked opponent faced in the DI era.
The Lancers were focused out of the gate as they would begin the contest on a 7-2 run with Emma Johansson and Lauren Olsen getting themselves in the scoring column. CBU led the majority of the first period, but a buzzer-beating jumper by Nebraska's Petra Bozan would give the Cornhuskers the 19-17 lead after one quarter of action.
Nebraska would open up its largest lead of the first half in the second period at 36-29 with 1:49 remaining, but the Lancers would not be phased. CBU would score the final four points of the half, including a fastbreak layup from Khloe Lemon, before the buzzer sounded to trim the deficit to a one-possession game at the half. CBU outshot Nebraska 42%-33% and would have a combined 20 points from the duo of Olsen and Johansson.
The Lancers would carry over their momentum into the outset of the second half as a Grace Schmidt triple would tie the game at 38 and an Olsen layup would give CBU the lead 42-40. The Cornhuskers would turn up the energy with a 14-0 run to seize all the momentum and get their sizable crowd into the ball game. CBU would regain its composure and would slice the lead down to nine heading into the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run to close the third.
Nebraska would dominate the fourth quarter to close out the game, outscoring the Lancers 32-10, led by its leading scorer, Brit Prince, who would score nine points on 100% shooting from the floor.
True freshman Lauren Olsen would lead the scoring fpor CBU with 17 points on 50% shooting from the floor and would tie a season-high with eight rebounds. Emma Johansson also contributed a solid performance with 13 points and three blocks while shooting over 50% from the floor. The turnover battle went their way as the #23 Cornhuskers forced 22 turnovers, which led to 23 points.
NEXT: The Lancers will have a week off before beginning conference play at home on Monday, December 29, against Utah Valley in the Fowler Events Center.
