RIVERSIDE — California Baptist University cross country had a chance to showcase its depth in its regular-season finale and last chance to tune-up for the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
The Lancers did more than that and came away with the men's team title, despite using their second lineup in as many days at UC Riverside's Highlander Invitational on Saturday. Matias Reynaga led the squad with a runner-up finish and the 10th best 8,000-meter time in program history when he crossed the finish line in 24 minutes and 2.2 seconds.
California Baptist's women took seventh place overall, as they also tested their depth with their second lineup in as many days after both squads ran in the Florida State Invitational/NCAA Pre-Nationals in Tallahassee on Friday.
The men scored 75 points to just edge out the runner-up Cal State Fullerton (78). WAC foe Grand Canyon (113), UCLA (147) and Long Beach State (169) rounded out the top five. The Titans won the team title on the women's side (35), while UC Irvine (88) and NM State (112) made up the top three. UC Riverside (137), San Diego State (151) and Long Beach State (173) also finished in front of CBU (249).
Saturday also served as another good look at the UCR Ag Ops Course, which will be the host site for the 2021 WAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. It was CBU's second time running the course this season. The Lancers will look to defend their perfect sweep at last year's conference championships, while the women are in the hunt for their fourth-straight WAC title.
CBU placed its five scorers in the top 30 with times under 24:45 on the men's side. Tyler Tickner was the second scorer (15th, 24:24.6) and Massimiliano Berti was next (20th, 24:30.5); followed by Dylan Van Der Hock (23rd, 24:38.7) and Zlatko Kozuhar (28th, 24:43.4).
Paige Haynes and Sylvia De La Pena paced the women, as Haynes took 39th (21:50.3) and De La Pena 41st (21:53.6). Carlota Rodes (45th, 21:57.6); Emilie Renaud (58th, 22:12.2) and Mia Cabrera (128th, 23:23.5) completed the scoring for the Lancers.
