MBB Preview: Lancers Continue Homestand With Three Opponents This Week

RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University continues its homestand in the CBU Events Center this week, as the Lancers host Jackson State (Nov. 16), San Jose State (Nov. 18) and Northern Colorado (Nov. 21).

The Lancers opened the season with a pair of wins over San Francisco State (87-65) and Mississippi Valley State (95-66). In both games, the Lancers had five players finish in double figures, and Taran Armstrong was awarded TicketSmarter WAC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week for his performance in the two wins. With 8.5 assists on the year, Armstrong leads the nation among freshmen in assists per game and is eighth among all players.

Jackson State enters Tuesday's game at 0-2 on the season, falling to No. 11 Illinois (71-47) and Louisiana Tech (70-68). This will mark the second matchup between the Lancers and the Tigers, as CBU holds a 1-0 series lead with a 93-70 victory back on Nov. 5, 2019.

Notable Notes:

  • In 2020-21, the Tigers went 12-6 on the year and a perfect 11-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
  • The undefeated conference season led them to become Co-SWAC Regular Season Champions with Prairie View A&M, as the two teams were unable to play each other due to postponed and canceled games.
  • Jayveous McKinnis, a senior forward from Pearl, Miss., leads the Tigers with 15.5 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game.
  • McKinnis averages a team-best 32.0 minutes per game and is shooting 58.3 percent from the field in the Tigers' first two games.
  • Ken Evans Jr. is the only other Tiger in double figures, as he is averaging 10.5 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per game.

San Jose State will make its first trip to the CBU Events Center for Thursday's contest, as the meeting between the Lancers and the Spartans will be a first-time matchup. The game is part of the Abe Lemons Classic with a four-team pod featuring nationally-ranked Texas, Northern Colorado, the Lancers and the Spartans.

Notable Notes:

  • The Spartans opened their season with a nail-biter on Nov. 11, as they beat Cal State Fullerton, 78-76.
  • San Jose State plays one game this week before the tip-off with the Lancers, as the Spartans face Stanford on Nov. 15.
  • The Spartans had three players score double figures in the win over the Titans, as Shon Robinson and Trey Smith recorded 14 points each.
  • Smith played a team-high 34 minutes in the contest, while Robinson recorded the second-fewest minutes played on the team with 20.
  • Alvaro Cardenas, a guard from Granada, Spain, scored six points in his collegiate debut and was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week.
  • Last season, the Spartans finished 5-16 overall and 3-13 in the Mountain West.
  • Tim Miles was named the head men's basketball coach for San Jose State on April 6, 2021. He joins the SJSU program after previously serving as the head coach at the University of Nebraska.

Northern Colorado has played the most games of the three schools up to this point, with a 2-1 record on the season. The Bears opened the season with a pair of wins over Pacific (67-65) and Hawaii (81-78), before falling to Hawaii-Hilo (87-79) on Nov. 13.

Notable Notes:

  • Northern Colorado will face Colorado College on Nov. 15 and No. 8 Texas on Nov. 17 before facing the Lancers in the Events Center.
  • This marks a first-time matchup between the Lancers and the Bears.
  • Daylen Kountz, a senior guard from Denver, Colo., leads the team with 21.0 points per game on 35.7 minutes per game.
  • Matt Johnson, Brodie Hume, and Kur Jongkuch are all averaging double figures for the Bears.
  • Northern Colorado relies heavily on Kountz, Johnson, Hume, and Jongkuch, as all four players are averaging over 30 minutes of playing time.
  • Dalton Knecht is the other Bears' starter, averaging 7.3 points per game and 29.3 minutes per contest.
