WBB PREVIEW: Lancers to Battle UC Santa Barbara and TCU In Thanksgiving Classic
11/22/2021 2:37:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – After a pair of hard-fought games against #15 Oregon State and UC Irvine last week, the California Baptist University women's basketball team will prepare for its next challenge, two games in two days in Northern California. The Lancers will head to Moraga, Calif., to take part in the Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, slated to take on UC Santa Barbara and TCU on Nov. 26 & 27, respectively.
The first-ever matchup against Oregon State revealed many positives about the Lancers as the team pushed the nationally ranked Beavers for 40 minutes. The Lancers led at halftime, but were unable to hold on for the win against 15th ranked OSU, dropping their first regular season game since Feb. 2020, 80-72.
The Lancers bounced back and took a win away from UC Irvine in the team's home opener, using overtime to do so. CBU erased an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter as Georgia Dale and Ane Olaeta led them through the overtime period to the victory. Olaeta set a new program-record with 17 assists in the game, the most by any player against an NCAA Division I opponent so far this season.
Caitlyn Harper averaged 22.5 points and 6.5 rebounds on her way to earning her first TicketSmarter WAC Player of the Week award of the season. Olaeta is averaging an NCAA-best 10.3 assists per game after three contests, while Dale is averaging a double-double so far this year with 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.

The Lancers will first face the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Nov. 26. CBU and UCSB are very familiar with each other having played three times in the past three years, with the Lancers owning a 3-0 record during that run. UCSB has a respectable 2-1 record against three quality opponents, earning wins over Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine with a loss to the Big Ten's Northwestern Wildcats in the middle.
The Gauchos have four players averaging 9.7 points per game or better right now, led by senior Danae Miller at 11.5. The argument could be made for Ila Lane to be the key to the Gauchos' gameplan as Lane is second in scoring at 10.7 points per game, while also grabbing 12 boards per game.

CBU will face off with its second Power 5 opponent this season in TCU. This will mark the first-ever game against a Big 12 team for the women's program. The Horned Frogs are 1-2 this year, defeating Houston Baptist while falling to Tulane in double-overtime and North Carolina. TCU may reach .500 before Saturday as they face host Saint Mary's ahead of the game against CBU on the 27th.
The Frogs are led by the duo of Lauren Heard and Tavy Diggs who are both averaging double-digit scoring along with seven rebounds per game. Heard, a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, was named to the watch lists for the Naismith Award, given to the top college player, and Lieberman Award, given to the top college point guard, before the start of the season.
Both games are set for noon start times at Saint Mary's University Credit Union Pavilion.
