RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University closed out 2021 and non-conference play with a big 96-41 win over La Verne on Tuesday in the Events Center.
Ten different Lancers scored in the game, with four in double figures: Tre Armstrong (20), Reed Nottage (17), Te'Jon Sawyer (12) and Juhlawnei Stone (11). CBU improves to 10-3 on the year, with the win also representing its 10th home victory of the season, which leads all of NCAA Division I.
The Lancers shot 61 percent from the field in the game (36-59) and hit 11 three-pointers, with 27 of their buckets coming off assists. CBU also had a 49-22 edge in rebounds and held the Leopards to 27 percent shooting overall (15-55). La Verne remains 2-9 on the season as Tuesday's game served as an exhibition for the squad.
"We wanted to improve at getting stops and turning those stops into transition. We stayed organized for the most part. The guys made shots. It was a lot of fun," said CBU Head Coach Rick Croy.
Armstrong went off for a season-high 20 points with six three-pointers, which tied the program's single-game record for triples in the CBU Events Center. It was the second game in a row that's happened after Ty Rowell matched it last week against Southeast Missouri State.
"Tre is one of the best shooters in the conference; another guy that is improving in all facets," Croy said. "He's become a great leader for us. That's what we see in practice every day, honestly. He's got a really sharp game."
Nottage's 17 points came on six-for-seven shooting, while Sawyer logged his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes.
"Te'Jon is an improving player. He's got good skill, good hands. He knows the game," Croy said. "He's got to keep improving his conditioning so he can do it for longer stretches, and do it with more force when it counts. He's shown he can make plays and he can impact the game. Now, he's just got to keep being able to do it at a higher and higher level."
