Lancers Sweep WAC Opener at Tarleton State with Balanced Performance

STEPHENVILLE – California Baptist University volleyball opened its Western Athletic Conference season with a sweep on the road at Tarleton State on Monday night, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.
Cali Hoye earned Player of the Match honors after she posted match-high in points (17) and kills (15). She finished with a .344 hitting percentage and .469 kill percentage to go along with six digs, an ace and a block.
The Lancers improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the WAC, while TSU drops to 1-3, 0-3. CBU will go for the series sweep when the two face each other again Tuesday at 4 p.m. Pacific.
Libero Paige Johnstone nearly notched a double-double with a match-high 15 digs and seven assists. Setter Leah Pease was not far off one, either, with 17 assists and eight digs to her total. Tesa Oaks also finished with eight kills, eight digs and two aces for CBU.
BALANCE ON OFFENSE
CBU continued to be a picture of balance on offense, as six different players put down at least four kills in the match. Christine Graff added seven kills and three blocks, while Sydney Marks had five kills.
Middle blockers Ellie Voss and Chandler Gorman were disruptive all night on offense and defense. They helped hold the Texans to a .151 hitting percentage and combined for 10 kills on a .381 percentage (10-2-21). Gorman finished with four kills and four blocks (two solo) and an ace, while Voss had six kills.

Set one was close throughout. Neither team held more than a two-point lead until CBU broke a 17-17 tie, with a 5-1 run to go up 22-18. Two kills from Hoye and a solo block from Gorman highlighted the run. The Texans fought back within two points, 24-22, but Oaks provided set point with a strong kill into the middle of the court.
The Lancers ran away with set two, as they hit .448 as a team and got several key blocks from Gorman and Graf in the game, including the winning point.
It appeared CBU would run away with set three, as well, as it led throughout and took set point at 24-19. TSU managed to make it interesting, with a 4-0 run that forced a timeout from the Lancers.
CBU avoided overtime out of the break, as Oaks passed the ball to Pease, who set it right back to her. Oaks fired a cross-court shot off the Texan's libero for match point.

The Lancers and Texans will turn right around and face each other again Tuesday at 4 p.m. Pacific. The match will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network, with live stats provided by TSU, as well.
